OpenAI Joins the AI Porn Goldrush

Sam Altman dropped a news bomb on X yesterday, from the BBC:

OpenAI plans to allow a wider range of content, including erotica, on its popular chatbot ChatGPT as part of its push to "treat adult users like adults", says its boss Sam Altman.

In a post on X on Tuesday, Mr Altman said upcoming versions of the popular chatbot would enable it to behave in a more human-like way - "but only if you want it, not because we are usage maxxing".

We have the world's most largely used AI generator, following the path of Meta and X and realizing to really make people pay for your product, you need to have it be your best friend, your concubine, or your therapist. Enter adult verification and "companion" bots.

OpenAI is quickly realizing that GenAI isn't the path forward (or maybe even close? - Nate Silver thinks so) to monetization. After all, someone has to pay for the massive capital expenditures being invested in chips, data centers, training, data, and model construction.

If even 10% of OpenAI's current users pay more for adult features - that's at least 70 million more customers. Questions abound - how will adult verification work? Will SoraX be plugged in? Why place any limits on adult content at all?
