In December, with a group of like-minded friends in the neighborhood/school/parish, we purchased Tin Can Phones. They arrived last week and we quickly set them up. Since, then I have seen the promise and blessing of having a real phone in the house (for cheaper!).

The children call each other to check in on playing and organize activities - which is great in itself.

More importantly, I have seen my youngest call and speak with his extended family nearly every day. The blessing of having my kids comfortable enough to reach out to a grandparent or aunt is truly awesome, especially since they live far away!

In addition, it has been a great opportunity to build up a sense of politeness and consciousness. With no visual clues (like their previous long-distance method of communication, FaceTime, the phone promotes clear speaking and identification. We still have a ways to go in terms of answering politely and outlining why we might be calling; but we are getting there!

Added bonus: recording a family voicemail.

TinCan Details:

  1. Wi-Fi enabled phone.

  2. TinCans can call other TinCans and 911 for free.

  3. You can pay monthly ($10) to add calling to non-Tin Cans but only ones you approve and add!

  4. You can set up speed dial and voicemails.

  5. You can have "off" hours to avoid late night phone calls.
