Trustworthy in Small Things

‘Well done, good servant! Because you have been trustworthy in a very small thing, take charge of ten cities.’
- Luke 19

This quote came into my head last week as I discussed an issue in another school involving trustworthiness. It also arises in today's Gospel.

The virtue of integrity is one that I don't believe is brought up enough as a goal in our schools. Integrity is the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles and I think there's an element of independent rightness. We, as adults, are not consistently monitored for rightness and honesty. Our nobleman has departed and we are left with gifts, talents, and treasure to use and invest in building up the kingdom.

In this particular case involving trustworthiness, there was some dishonesty in a small matter. If someone can't be honest or trustworthy in a small matter (whether in terms of issue or money), how can we - as leaders - expect them to do so with regards to the big things?

We are entrusting our teachers and staff with children and an institution two thousand years old. That sense of gravity must be balanced with an appeal to mercy and forgiveness, for sure, but - to me - the safety and soundness of the children comes first. Dishonesty demonstrates a lack of integrity that would make me question all interactions with that staff member. Ultimately, I think that that is poisonous to a well-functioning culture at a school.
