"The standard should be the floor." - Mike Fisher on Principal Center Radio
All too often, we underestimate what we, ourselves, and our students can do. Are our expectations set to hit high? If we've mastered what is the goal, do we move on?
It's report card time here at Saint Joe's. I've read all of them and there were plenty of A's in some of the classes. My challenge for these teachers is - if students have mastered the concepts for that grade level (and thus earned an A) we need to differentiate and challenge them with more complex work (not just extra!).
I think we are doing a better job as a profession in differentiating for the under-performing - which should definitely be our first focus. On the other hand, do we do the same for those falling on the upper end of the bell curve? Those who have exceeded the standard?
What do we owe those kids who are more than just fine? How do we move more into that framework of what is above the standard?
Ideas?
