Today is the Solemnity of Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, which as the Lanky Guys say, should always be shouted in a "He-Man" style voice.

Not the actual king of the universe.

The idea of kingship is one increasingly removed from our world, especially for those of us born in a country established to be free of kings and to be a democratic republic (pet peeve: people thinking we live in a democracy).

However, I think the idea of kingship does have two important virtues for us: fear of the Lord and adoration.

This fear is one originating not in a patriarchal, fear of reprimand sense, but in one rooted in acknowledgement of God's omnipotence and our complete dependence on him. We are sustained by his power and love; without our existence would end.

The adoration of our Lord is rooted in a acknowledgement of this awesome love. The creator of all things incarnated as created being. Lived a life as other men have - one full of dependence, hurt, suffering, joy, laughter, and poop. Then died for the salvation of those who betrayed and killed him.

Jesus is our king.

The actual king.
