If there was ever a time where the differentiator of a Catholic school could shine through - it's a pandemic.
Our schools should provide not only an education (and one rooted in faith) but the development of a communion. And at a time where people are materially, socially, emotionally, and spiritually struggling, we are in a position to (hopefully) respond.
I think it's helpful to remember that COVID-19 is not a disruptor; it's an accelerator.
Online shopping has been growing every year, COVID sped it up.
Distrust of experts has been growing every year, COVID sped it up.
Tensions with China and its rise have been growing, COVID sped it up.
Catholics schools on shaky financial grounds have been struggling, COVID sped it up.
BUT if we have established a culture at a school beyond tuition = teaching, beyond we watch your kid while you work, beyond here's the minimum we can do for you; then I believe we are in a position to thrive.
And that's why I wrote this letter to our community:
We need to come together because the tuition I pay and the money I raise goes not just to my two boys, but to the kids in the school whose dad is out of work, whose mom's hours are cut, to the family with higher health care expenses, to the ones sending money back to Mexico, and all the others.
We need to come together because if I go out to a bar or don't wear a mask and asymptomatically catch COVID-19, then I could endanger not just my kids, but the kids in the school whose dad is out of work, whose mom's hours are cut, the family with already higher health care expenses, the ones working hard to send money back to family in Mexico, and all the others.
Our choices influence each other.
Our country and our community will only grow stronger if we see that.
