Clocking it at 136 pages, this brief ASCDpublished book offers advice for leaders and teachers on "how to build, maintain, and restore relationships inside the classroom and out.
Each chapter follows a set pattern of a brief anecdote introducing the relationship, background on the relationship - focusing on trust and authenticity - and then concrete strategies for building, mainting, and restoring the relationships. The final two sections of each chapter present a summary table with the strategies and personal reflections from the Creekmores in their roles as school counselor and teacher.

Beginning with the clear focus on why relationships matter - "from the moment you enter the school building, you are constructing or deconstructing relationships" (7) - the Creekmores are very much focused on the importance of and providing practical support for the many relationships in a building. They begin with the teacher-self relationship and discuss ways to avoid burnout and practice self care. They then cycle through the teacher's relationship with students, families, teachers, administrators, staff, and online. Although focused on the teacher to other dynamic - these strategies are equally employable for any of the other stakeholders listed.
A practical guide and one worth having as a reference for teachers struggling emotionally. Another practical way to put the text into action is a quick book study for a PLC team that is seeking to grow the ways that staff are connecting. Either way, I'd recommend that school leaders and teacher mentors pick up a copy to be ready to support their colleagues.
