10 Things I do in the Summer

So what does a principal do in the summer?

1. Reflect with Faculty - Our June Meetings are a great chance for us to step out of the hustle and bustle of school and see where we succeeded and failed this year with an eye to firming up our strengths and seeking solutions to our weaknesses. This year, we looked at our testing results, reflected on the year, identified strengths and weaknesses, threats and opportunities, and our WASC annual report.

2. Reflect by myself - Similar to above but on my own performance and goals!

3. Look ahead with Faculty - Our second day of June meetings focused on our new iPad grant, my plan to use Elena Aguilar's Onward for our faculty meetings, and our plan for a Rigor-based PD with the Onward Leaders gang.

4. Look ahead for myself - I'm still in the process of crafting my goals for 2019-2020. Updates hopefully to come!

5. Paperwork - payroll, spreadsheets, turnover, tuition negotiations, etc. etc. etc.

6. Maintenance - our staff work super hard to clean and ready the school for another year; anything I can do to support them I do!

7. Plan - taking our goals from 1-4 - what can I do in the summer to make these things a reality.

8. Marketing - tours, testings, and creation of new marketing plans! This is the fun part of the job (if stressful!). I do lessen our school's social media presence in the summer to once a day and sometimes it's hard to come up with material! (instagram twitter).

9. Organize - coming out of maintenance and planning, what can we clean up - either physical, mental, or organizationally?

10. Retreat - taking a break is something that is becoming more and more central for me as I settle into the job of a principal. So I will take time away from school and thoughts and with my family and, hopefully, some good books!

I wish.
